THE CHALLENGE
Many of our clients are hesitant to implement custom Apex development because they don't have developers who can maintain that code later. Salesforce offers a lot of configuration options but sometimes it's harder to maintain complex configuration than simple code. Our customer loves the configuration options that Salesforce provides for page layouts, record types, record pages, and multi-tabs to manage what fields display for different users. But with multiple user groups, dozens of page layouts and record types, etc. this got messy and convoluted fast.

WHAT WE DID
We built a custom page that looks like a standard Salesforce page but loads tab, section, field data from a custom setting. The custom setting stores the user and/or profile info, list of tabs, list of sections per tab, and list of fields per section. When the page is accessed, the rendering happens dynamically after identifying the user and retrieving his/her UI display configuration info. With some code and much easier configuration management, the users got a highly dynamic, customizable display option.
